The island does the heavy lifting in this room. Prep and cooking happen on the far side, while the granite top runs out past the cabinet base to leave room for stools at the near end, so the room stays sociable while somebody is working in it.
The island base is panelled on the seating side rather than left as a plain box, which is what stops it reading as a unit dropped into the middle of the floor. The perimeter cabinetry is the same cherry, with a glazed corner cabinet taking the turn by the window.
